6.9 Earthquake Jolts Remote Part of Alaska
A strong earthquake in a remote area of the Alaskan peninsula Monday morning caused minor damage in the town of Chignik and sloshed oil stored at a refinery 400 miles away.
The quake, measured at magnitude 6.9, was centered 70 miles southeast of Chignik. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a tidal wave warning for coastal Alaska and British Columbia, but the resulting wave was less than 6 inches high at Sand Point, Alaska. Workers at the Tesoro Refinery in Kenai, 400 miles away, felt the quake and reported sloshing in oil storage tanks.
