Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants is accused of beating his former girlfriend and threatening her with a gun, according to a civil action seeking unspecified damages from the outfielder.

The civil complaint was filed Tuesday in San Diego County Superior Court on behalf of Debra Brice, attorney Brian Hochvert said Thursday.

The allegations against Mitchell, who leads the major leagues with 42 home runs and 115 runs batted in, stem from a disturbance on Sept. 11, 1988, in Foster City, south of San Francisco.

Foster City Police spokesman Sgt. Larry Riche confirmed that officers from the department responded to Brice’s call for help and took three guns away from Mitchell that night.

Riche said Mitchell was not arrested, and no criminal charges have been filed.

Mitchell, with the Giants in Atlanta, had no comment.
