A Newport Beach man was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a car while crossing Coast Highway near Highland Street, police said.

Tommy Lee Bailey, 38, was crossing the street about 7:40 p.m. Thursday when a westbound yellow 1979 Cadillac struck him, said Newport Beach Officer Robert Oakley. Bailey did not cross at a pedestrian crosswalk, Oakley said. He died instantly.

The driver, Harriett Ruth Foster, 48, of Huntington Beach was not charged in the accident.

“It appears that the pedestrian was at fault in this case,” Oakley said.
