Vickers Sparks Irvine High Past University

Junior Shad Vickers scored two touchdowns Friday to lead Irvine High School to a 19-3 victory over visiting University.

Vickers had 94 yards on 19 carries for Irvine, which now leads the series between the schools, 7-5.

Irvine took a 7-0 lead on senior Randy Martin’s 35-yard run with 11 minutes 32 seconds left in the first quarter.

University cut it to 7-3 when David Jacobson kicked a 33-yard field goal with 7:14 remaining in the third. Vickers scored from 15 yards with 1:45 remaining in the quarter, but the kick failed, leaving Irvine with a 13-3 lead.

Irvine took a 19-3 lead when Vickers ran in from one yard with 3:35 remaining.

Irvine quarterback Vaughn Shackelford, in his first varsity start, completed two of four passes for 22 yards, and Matt Spencer added 74 yards rushing on four carries. Martin rushed for 59 carries on six carries.

University quarterback Brian Vail completed 15 of 32 passes for 184 yards, with one interception.

Senior Adam Grable was University’s leading rusher with 39 yards on 10 carries.
