College Roundup : Fullerton Falls to USC in Women’s Volleyball

The Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team lost to USC, 15-3, 15-13, 15-4, on Saturday in the Collegiate Premiere tournament at the Titan Gym.

Fullerton won its first three games of the tournament but lost Friday to San Diego State and Saturday to USC and did not place in the tournament. Fullerton now has a 4-3 record for the season.

California defeated UC Santa Barbara 15-5, 13-5, 15-6, 8-15, 15-5, to win the championship.

Outside hitter Rachel Wittliff, a freshman, led Fullerton with eight kills. Sabrina Dennis, who was named to the All-tournament team, and and Anne Witkowski each had five digs for the Titans.

USC, 4-1 in tournament play, was led by outside hitter Lonise Norfleet and middle blocker Megan McCallister, who each had 12 kills. Stefanie Bodison had 19 digs for the Trojans.

At the Whittier College Invitational volleyball tournament:

SCC def. Azusa Pacific 15-2, 15-10, 15-6--In the fifth-place match Heather Frewin had eight kills, Susan Rice had seven and Susan Dueker had six for Southern California College.

Redlands def. SCC 10-15, 19-17, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10--In Saturday’s early match, Frewin had 15 kills and Dueker had nine kills and five aces for Southern California College.

At the Far West Soccer Invitational at Chapman College:

Chapman 1, Pacific Lutheran 0--In the third-place game, senior Keri Belo blocked three penalty kicks and Chapman scored its three to give Chapman the victory. Jeff Hudson, Jamie Wagner and Fabrizio Soto converted 12-yard penalty kicks for Chapman.

Northeast Missouri State 1, Southern California College 0--Quinn Ross scored a header at 13:22 to give Northeastern Missouri State fifth place.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Washington 1, Cal State Fullerton 0--Steve George’s shot to tie the game with one left was saved by Washington’s Rolf Noster as Fullerton (2-1) lost at Washington.

At the Cal State Fullerton cross-country invitational:

Cal State Fullerton men’s cross-country team finished third thanks to two impressive performances from freshman at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.

Tennessee finished first with 22 points, UCLA was second with 68 points and Fullerton had 74 points.

Fullerton freshman Steve Frisone, who graduated from Laguna Hills High School, finished eighth with a time of 25 minutes, eight seconds. Jose Brito, who graduated from Santa Ana Valley, finished 11th with a time of 25:06.

In the women’s division, Fullerton finished sixth but had a strong performance by freshman Beth Rosipajla, who graduated from El Dorado and finished seventh with a time of 18:35.

UCLA won the division a score of 49, Arizona was second (56) and San Diego State (98) was third. UCLA was led by women’s winner Kira Jorgensen who won with a time of 18:23.
