College Soccer : Piri, Blumkin Lift CS Northridge Over Master’s
Cal State Northridge halfback Scott Piri scored on an assist from Bobby Reyes five minutes into the second half Saturday, and goalkeeper Jeff Blumkin recorded the Matadors’ second consecutive shutout, stopping The Master’s College, 1-0, before a crowd of 2,111 in a nonconference soccer match at Northridge.
The teams combined for 56 fouls, four yellow cards, and two red cards. Master’s (1-2) was down a player for 27 minutes in the second half because of a red card issued to Randy Whitfield, but the Matadors (2-0) could not capitalize.
It was the second game in a row in which a CSUN player received a red card, this one going to Ed Burns. Blumkin was filling in for Mike Littman, who was red-carded for fighting in the Matadors’ win over Cal State Los Angeles on Friday.
Loyola Marymount 1, Occidental 0--The Tigers were unable to score for the second consecutive day and were eliminated from the Azusa Pacific tournament. Loyola broke a scoreless tie with 13 minutes to play. Goalie Lewis Tierney had eight saves for Occidental (0-2).
