Big Eight Roundup : Colorado, Off Slowly, Still Wins

Ninth-ranked Colorado, trailing 17-14 midway through the second quarter, scored on four consecutive possessions for a 38-20 lead and beat Colorado State, 45-20, Saturday at Boulder.

Eric Bieniemy ran for 156 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Buffaloes (2-0).

Colorado opened its season Monday night with a 27-6 victory over Texas.

Both teams lost their starting quarterbacks. Colorado State’s Kevin Verdugo aggravated a shoulder injury late in the first half, and Colorado’s Darian Hagan was sidelined in the third quarter by a bruised right forearm.

After Ken Culbertson’s 32-yard field goal tied the score, Jeff Campbell’s 66-yard run set up Bieniemy’s six-yard touchdown that put the Buffaloes ahead, 24-17.

Nebraska 48, No. Illinois 17--Ken Clark, who played only the first 20 minutes because of a sore knee, rushed for 168 yards and one touchdown as the No. 4 Cornhuskers overcame five first-half turnovers and beat the Huskies at Lincoln, Neb.

Leodis Flowers added two touchdowns for the Cornhuskers, who were tied, 17-17, at halftime. But Nebraska (1-0) scored on its first four possessions of the second half.

Northern Illinois, which beat Cal State Fullerton, 26-27, last week, is now 1-1.

Tulsa 20, Oklahoma St. 10--T.J. Rubley threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns to become Tulsa’s all-time passing leader as the Golden Hurricane beat the Cowboys at Tulsa, Okla.

Tulsa broke a 10-10 tie with 4:15 left in the game when Rubley threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Dan Bitson. Oklahoma State fumbled on its next possession, and David Fuess put the game out of reach with a 29-yard field goal with 1:51 left.

The victory gives Tulsa its first 2-0 start in 11 years, when Coach David Rader was the starting quarterback.

Rubley, a junior, completed 14 of 32 passes and has 4,946 yards, surpassing the mark of 4,779 that Jerry Rhome set in 1963-64. Rhome is the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback coach.

Missouri 14, Texas Christian 10--Kent Kiefer threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Jim White early in the fourth quarter at Columbia, Mo., as the Tigers battled back to beat the Horned Frogs in Missouri Coach Bob Stull’s debut.

Missouri rallied in the final half after TCU ran and passed for 308 yards in the first two quarters.

Kiefer completed 18 of 28 passes for 226 yards with three interceptions.

Iowa State 28, Ohio U. 3--Blaise Bryant, a transfer from Golden West College in Huntington Beach, rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns in his first major college game and Bret Oberg passed for one score and ran for another in leading the Cyclones at Ames, Iowa.

Bryant carried 27 times in becoming the sixth Iowa State runner to get more than 200 yards in a game. He scored on a 25-yard run in the second quarter and set up his one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter with a 56-yard gain.

Louisville 33, Kansas 28--Carwell Gardner ran for two touchdowns and Ron Bell kicked three field goals as the Cardinals rallied with the help of Kansas mistakes to beat the Jayhawks at Lawrence, Kan.
