A Reno, Nev., man convicted of murdering four people in San Diego during a drug-related dispute in 1986 was sentenced Tuesday to life in state prison without possibility of parole.
Superior Court Judge Paul Overton sentenced Carlos Fonseca, 24, to the life term for his four first-degree murder convictions. The same jury that convicted Fonseca on June 21 recommended Aug. 2 that he spend the rest of his life in prison.
Overton denied bids by defense attorneys for a new trial and a continuation of the sentencing date.
Overton also sentenced Fonseca to nine years in state prison for his attempted-murder conviction involving a man who survived the Dec. 28, 1986, attacks in a house in the College Grove area.
The victims, all Mexican citizens, were Rosa Partida Medina, 25; Enrique Mejia Beltran, 25; Miguel Martinez Vasquez, 20, and Augustine Farfan, about 21.
The survivor, who testified against Fonseca, is Armando Garcia Rubio, who is in his 20s. He was shot twice.
