Orange County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday released the identity of a man who was shot to death when he tried to flee from two robbers along a dirt road in an unincorporated area north of Irvine.

The victim was Alfredo Garcia Lara, 59, who lived in a labor camp about two miles from where he and two companions were riding bicycles when confronted shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday by the gunmen, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said.

The gunmen demanded money and ordered the three men to lie down on a dirt road paralleling Irvine Boulevard, west of Jeffrey Road about 200 yards north of the Irvine city limits, Olson said. When Lara tried to flee, he was shot.
