THE SIDELINES : 17 Nominees for ’89 Sportswoman

Olympic stars Florence Griffith-Joyner and Janet Evans are among 17 nominees for the 1989 Women’s Sports Foundation Amateur and Professional Sportswoman of the Year awards.

Evans, who won three swimming gold medals at Seoul, and Griffith-Joyner, with three track golds and a silver, both set world records in 1988. They are eligible for the amateur award. Also nominated for the amateur are freestyle skier Jan Bucher; Olympic speed skating gold medalist Bonnie Blair, racquetball world champion Michelle Gilman, gymnast Brandy Johnson, taekwondo competitor Lynette Love, World Cup shooting gold medalist Launi Meili and diver Wendy Lian Williams, the World Cup platform champion.

The professional nominees are tennis star Steffi Graf, golfer Betsy King, jockey Julie Krone, board sailer Nathalie Lelievre, water skier Deena Mapple, world triathlon champion Paula Newby-Fraser, auto racer Shawna Robinson and bowler Robin Romeo. The winners will be announced Oct. 3.
