Bob Brenly singled home Will Clark with an unearned run in the 12th inning Thursday to give the San Francisco Giants a 4-3 victory over Cincinnati, their second consecutive extra-inning victory over the Reds.

The win at San Francisco reduced the Giants’ magic number to 11 to clinch the National League West title.

Clark, who had three hits, reached first in the 12th when his grounder skipped off third baseman Luis Quinones’ glove for a error. Clark stole second as Kevin Mitchell struck out, and Matt Williams was walked intentionally. Brenly then hit a looping fly down the line that right fielder Paul O’Neill couldn’t reach.

Norm Charlton (6-2) was the loser despite striking out a career-high 10 batters in 4 1/3 innings, including six straight between the ninth and 11th. Ernie Camacho (3-0), the fifth Giant pitcher, worked a scoreless 12th inning.

Eric Davis had four hits and drove in a run for the Reds. He was seven for 10 in the two-game series with five runs batted in.

Mitchell drew his 30th intentional walk to set a major league record for right-handed hitters. Adolfo Phillips, Dale Murphy and Frank Howard each had 29.

Pittsburgh 4, St. Louis 3--Albert Hall, Jay Bell and Andy Van Slyke hit consecutive run-scoring doubles in the seventh inning as the Pirates beat the Cardinals before the smallest baseball crowd in Busch Stadium history.

Attendance was announced at 1,519. The game was a makeup of Wednesday night’s rainout, and the rescheduling was not announced until after midnight. The previous low was 3,380 on Sept. 27, 1972, against New York. A five-alarm fire at a warehouse less than a block away snarled traffic.

“I’ve never even hit batting practice before a crowd that small at Busch,” said Pittsburgh’s Andy Van Slyke, a former Cardinal.

Tom Glavine (14-8) earned his fourth victory over the Padres this season, giving up three runs on four hits in six innings.

The Padres dropped six games behind first-place San Francisco in the West. San Diego begins a three-game series at Candlestick Park tonight.
