Village Christian 14, Cathedral 8--Quarterback Matt Bates scored on one-yard sneaks in the first and fourth quarters to lead the Crusaders at Kennedy High.
The winning score, capping a 43-yard drive, came with 7:37 to play. Running back Rick Nickels carried three times for 28 yards in the drive.
On the game’s first play, Cathedral tailback Aldo Sanchez fumbled the ball to Village Christian at the Cathedral 22-yard line. Six plays later, Bates’ first sneak gave Village Christian the lead. A second-quarter snap flew over the head of Village Christian punter Robert Bateman for a safety to cut the Village Christian lead to 7-2.
A third-quarter sneak by Cathedral quarterback Mike Orozco gave Cathedral an 8-7 lead.
Village Christian running back Chad Everett gained 60 yards in 16 carries.
