College Roundup : UCI Wins Rhode Island Volleyball Title

UC Irvine won the Rhode Island volleyball invitational by defeating Rhode Island, 15-9, 15-11, 15-11, Saturday in Kingston, R.I.

Ali Wood had 19 kills and Kim Collins had 16 to lead Irvine (7-2).

Wood, a senior outside hitter, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Collins, a junior outside hitter, was named to the tournament team, as was sophomore setter Rhonda Schmitger.

In Irvine’s morning game, Collins had a career-high 27 kills to lead Irvine over Syracuse, 15-8, 15-4, 15-12. Carrie Janisch had 21 digs in that match.

At the UC Irvine water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 11, UCLA 10 (overtime)--Tom Wade scored four goals, three on penalty shots, to lead UC Irvine. Irvine scored four penalty shots, and the last proved to be the game winner: Julian Harvey converted with three minutes, 43 seconds remaining in overtime. Dan Smoot had three goals for third-ranked Irvine.

In its morning game, Irvine defeated UC San Diego, 15-9. Irvine will play USC at 9:20 a.m. in the championship semifinal match.

In nonconference soccer:

Chapman 2, Sonoma 0--Keith Olsen and Brian Wilson scored first-half goals to pace Chapman College (2-2-2) over visiting Sonoma.

At the Fresno State cross-country invitational:

Five of UC Irvine’s women’s team finished in the top ten to give Irvine the victory in the women’s division.

Irvine’s Brigid Stirling finished first on the 5,000-meter course with a time of 17 minutes, 25.4 seconds on the 5,000-meter course, and teammate Buffy Rabbit finished second with a time of 17:31.9. Also for Irvine: Caroline Plier was fifth (18:18.8), Rayna Cervantes was seventh (18:21.8) and Kelli Lewis was ninth (18.25.2).

Irvine finished third in the men’s division and was led by Aaron Mascorro, who finished 10th individually with a time of 31:51.1 on the 10,000-meter course. Marc Davis of Arizona was first (31:16.3.)

At the Whittier College cross-country invitational:

Christ College Irvine only had four participants and did not place as a team, but freshman Genevieve Graff won the individual title and set the 3.1-mile course record with a time of 19:26.1.

It was Graff’s first cross-country meet, although she is The Athletic Congress’ (TAC) junior champion in the 1,500 meters.

Southern California College’s Sheri Hall finished second at 19:35.9.
