Robber Takes Car, Drops Off Baby Girl

A 21-month-old girl was found in Koreatown about 20 minutes after she was taken, apparently unintentionally, by a robber who forced the child’s 59-year old baby-sitter out of a car and struggled with her before driving off, police said.

Camille Perez was found wandering on a street three blocks from the site of the incident--the 3600 block of West 6th Street--where she had apparently wriggled out of her car seat that was found nearby.

Police Sgt. Tom Johnson said the robber came up to the late-model Volvo, in which Virginia Antonio and the girl were sitting, opened the door and yanked Antonio out. The sitter put up a struggle and the robber threw her to the ground before he was able to drive away.

A large-scale search was under way when someone found the child and called police. The baby was reunited with her mother, Purita Perez, 34, who had gone inside a medical building while Antonio and the baby waited in the car. Johnson said the child was unhurt and Antonio was treated for minor injuries.

The car was found abandoned in South-Central Los Angeles several hours later.
