Fall Sports Roundup : Master’s Beats La Verne in Soccer

Randy Whitfield scored two goals Wednesday as The Master’s College defeated La Verne, 6-3, in a nonconference soccer match at Master’s.

Justin Roath, Jim Rickard, Geraldo Guimaraes, and Chris Bingman rounded out the scoring for Master’s (4-3-1), the 16th-ranked team in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Seconds before the end of the half, the Mustangs accidentally scored on themselves--the third such mishap in the past two matches--to narrow the lead to 4-2.

“I thought we played to the level of our opponent,” Master’s Coach Mark Schubert said. “I think we were a little tired.”

La Verne dropped to 1-3-1.

In another college soccer match:

Occidental 3, Pomona-Pitzer 3 (2 OT)--John Theodore scored to give Occidental a 3-2 lead midway through the first overtime period, but Pomona tied the match on a penalty kick in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Occidental.

With the Tigers trailing, 2-1, and 18 minutes to play in regulation, Aran Aleamoni scored. Five minutes earlier, Eric Levinson had scored to trim a 2-0 Pomona lead.

Goalkeeper Lewis Tierney had nine saves for Occidental (0-3-2, 0-0-2).

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burbank 23, Bell-Jeff 33--Mike Sanchez, Jose Mier and Adrian De La Rosa were the top three finishers for the Bulldogs in a nonleague meet at Griffith Park.

Sanchez finished the three-mile course in 16:05, outdistancing Mier (16:34) and De La Rosa (16:44).

Chris Lee led Bell-Jeff runners with a time of 17:12.

The Guards fell to 1-1. Burbank is 2-0.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Bell-Jeff 18, Burbank 46--The Guards took four of the first five places in the nonleague meet at Griffith Park.

Giselle Szemeredi took first in 20:35, followed by teammates Lourdes DeArmas (21:10) and Rosemary Amezcua (21:41). Burbank’s Claudia Linam was fourth in 21:52.

Bell-Jeff is undefeated in two meets. Burbank is 0-2.

TENNIS

Buena 13, Hart 5--Stacie Meeks and Fanya Bryant swept their singles matches to pace the Bulldogs in a nonconference match at Buena.

Cindy Courtemarsh and Shelly Manwaring teamed to win all three doubles matches for Hart (3-2).
