Curren, Sznajder, Cahill Advance in L.A. Tennis

Sixth-seeded Kevin Curren scored the last six points of the third-set tiebreaker to beat David Wheaton 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the second round of the Volvo tennis tournament Thursday.

In two other afternoon matches, Andrew Sznajder of Canada defeated Pieter Aldrich of South Africa, 6-1, 6-4, and Darren Cahill of Australia beat Jimmy Arias of Jericho, N.Y., 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded Michael Chang played Kenny Thorne in a night match. The $425,000 tournament is being played at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Wheaton, of Deephaven, Minn., was leading 6-2 in the tiebreaker but failed on four straight points.

Curren, of Austin, Texas, started his comeback with a forehand service return down the line. Wheaton hit a forehand shot long, then Curren hit two straight forehand volley winners to tie the score. Curren hit a backhand lob that Wheaton misjudged and won the match on a forehand volley.

Wheaton broke Curren in the sixth and eighth games of the first set while Curren broke Wheaton in the fourth game of the second set.

In the quarterfinals, Cahill will play the winner of the Chang-Thorne match, Curren will face Scott Davis, Sznajder will face fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein and second-seeded Brad Gilbert will face eighth-seed Mikael Pernfors.
