The father of Zola Budd, South African-born track star who was involved in a dramatic collision with Mary Decker Slaney in the 1984 Olympic Games, was found shot to death at his home near Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Police said Frank Budd, 56, had been murdered.
Last month, distance runner Zola Budd, 23, who tried to evade anti-apartheid boycotts by taking British citizenship in 1984, was barred from international competition for competing in a race in Bloemfontein.
Her father had long been estranged from his family and had not been invited to Zola’s wedding to a local businessman in April. Frank Budd acted as Zola’s trainer early in her running career, but she later turned to others, and her father accused her of ingratitude.
