“Hollywood Squares” did not make a star of George Gobel (featured in “Famous for Being Famous”).

Lonesome George’s rise to fame as a unique comedian predates “Hollywood Squares” by more than 40 years.

Ever since his discharge from Uncle Sam’s Air Force in the mid-’40s, Gobel crisscrossed the country dozens of times in his acclaimed and totally original comedy act in the top hotels and clubs in the country.

In the mid ‘50s, his Live Emmy Award series on NBC remains one of the treasured memories of the Golden Age of television. And the millions of viewers who watched him on David Selznick’s “Light’s Diamond Jubilee” on all three networks still cherish the experience.

I should know. Until my retirement three years ago, I was his press agent for 34 years. Come to think of it, I still am.
