RESPIGHI: Ancient Airs and Dances; “The Birds.” Australian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Lyndon Gee. Omega OCD 1007.

Here are stylish performances of Respighi’s brilliant but subtle orchestrations of diverse short pieces of the 16th and 17th centuries. The airs and dances (12 movements) don’t have quite the same light quality as Marriner’s version with the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, but they are spirited and well-played; with “The Birds” (five movements) added, all in full and clean sound, the disc offers a generous 73 minutes of music.
