San Pedro Sportswalk to Honor 4

The San Pedro Sportswalk announced its inductees for 1989 to a small invited group Thursday aboard the yacht Angelina II, cruising around Los Angeles Harbor. The inductees are Jerry West, general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, baseball greats Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson, and former world lightweight boxing champion Mando Ramos.

The Sportswalk, founded in 1978 by the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, honors outstanding sports figures with Los Angeles connections. They are selected by a committee of sports media representatives and civic leaders.

The bronze plaques will be placed in the sidewalks of San Pedro’s Beacon Street Redevelopment District. The unveiling ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 23 at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and 6th Street.

The winner of the Trani Sportswalk Award for 1989 was also announced: Ray Martinez, a San Pedro native, who was honored for his 34 years as a youth leader and executive leader of the San Pedro Boys Club.
