The City of Angels Brewing Co., which opened with fanfare two years ago in Santa Monica as the first in what was thought to be a new trend of brewery-restaurants, has gone out of business.

The restaurant owners could be reached for comment. However, the investors reportedly were not satisfied with the profits from the restaurant that made its own beer, and closed it last weekend.

Another tenant has taken over the 6,900-square-foot space at 1445 4th St. Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, who opened Border Grill on Melrose Avenue five years ago and City Restaurant on La Brea Avenue four years ago, will open a second Border Grill in Santa Monica.

Feniger said remodeling is expected to take about three months, with a target opening in late December or early January.

Feniger, who had been looking for a site near the beach for several months, said she had discussed taking over the City of Angels site for about three months.

Feniger said she was happy to find a location just a block from the revitalized and recently reopened Third Street Promenade mall, which city officials hope will become a center with upscale restaurants and live entertainment.

“We see its potential,” she said. “That area is ready to boom.”
