A 37-year-old Arleta man was in critical condition Sunday after he was chased and beaten by a group of men, Los Angeles police said.

The victim, Andres Rojas, was drinking with friends outside a house in the 7200 block of Farmdale Avenue in Sun Valley about 12:30 a.m. when several men approached him, Sgt. Kris Roberts said.

A fight broke out and Rojas fled on foot. Several of the men chased him to Camellia Avenue and Sherman Way, where he was beaten with a hard object and left lying on the street, Roberts said.

Rojas was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

One of the men who argued with Rojas, Francisco Chavez, 19, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Roberts said.

Police were looking for others involved in the fight. Roberts said authorities were unclear about the motive for the beating.
