Darrell Waltrip slipped past Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt to take the lead with 46 laps left Sunday and win the Goody’s 500, his third consecutive triumph at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Waltrip averaged 76.571 m.p.h. in his sixth victory of the season.

Harry Gant was second, .099 seconds back, followed by Dick Trickle, Wallace and Dale Jarrett. Earnhardt finished ninth because of tire problems.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix at Nazareth, Pa., clinching the CART-PPG Indy-car championship by beating Rick Mears.

Fittipaldi and Mears battled throughout the race, with Mears, who came into the event at Pennsylvania International Raceway 17 points behind, working to cut into that margin with only one race remaining.

Mears regained the lead from teammate Danny Sullivan when Sullivan pitted on lap 154. Fittipaldi was second until Mears was forced to pit for fuel 12 laps from the end.

Austria’s Gerhard Berger drove his Ferrari to victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril, a race marred by a collision between Britain’s Nigel Mansell and Brazilian world champion Ayrton Senna.

Alain Prost, driving a McLaren Honda, finished second and earned six points, giving him a total of 75 and extending his lead over Senna in the chase for the 1989 world title.
