An unemployed construction worker was arrested as a suspect late Tuesday night in the kidnapping and rape of a 12-year old girl who was abducted from an exclusive, gated condominium compound in Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach police arrested Kyle J. Borges, 29, at a friend’s house in the beach city in connection with the early Sunday morning attack in which the girl was taken from her father’s townhouse.

She was dragged from the complex by a man who held his hand over her mouth and taken to a waiting truck, police said. The suspect took her to a remote area near Bolsa Chica Drive where she was attacked and then abandoned, police said. She finally made her way to a telephone and called police.

Borges, who went voluntarily to the police station Tuesday evening after learning police wanted to talk to him, was being held in the Huntington Beach jail on suspicion of kidnap, rape and burglary in connection with the attack.

Bail for Borges was set at $50,000, but Huntington Beach Police Sgt. James Cutshaw said efforts were under way to have the bail increased.

Cutshaw said the investigation led to Borges after a flurry of calls responding to a composite drawing. Reading from a statement, Cutshaw said that “concerned citizens . . . provided information as to a possible suspect.”

Police declined to provide further information about the suspect or the information generated by the composite drawing.
