In a victory for the Directors Guild of America, the National Film Preservation Board on Tuesday voted to broadly define “material alteration” of the 25 classic movies it recently deemed worthy of protection. Under the board’s action, these films must carry a warning label if they are materially altered, unless the changes are needed to conform to TV networks’ standards and practices on sex, violence and foul language, or for insertion of commercials and public-service announcements. The directors had opposed a more narrow interpretation that would give TV stations and film producers greater latitude in editing.
