10 Slightly Hurt in Santa Clarita School Bus Collision

A car struck the back of a school bus in Santa Clarita on Wednesday, inflicting minor injuries on 10 junior high school students, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The youths complained of head and neck pains, Officer Dave Pokorny said. Seven were treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia and released, he said. The others were taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where they were expected to be released Wednesday night, a nursing supervisor said.

They were among about 90 students returning home from Arroyo Seco Junior High School when the accident occurred at 2:45 p.m. at Bouquet Canyon Road and Camargo Drive, Pokorny said.

Bus driver Rene Altamirano, 27, of Canyon Country was not injured, nor was the driver of the car, Evelyn Maxine Robinson, 52, of Saugus, Pokorny said.

Pokorny said Robinson turned left onto Bouquet and apparently did not see the bus, which was heading north on Bouquet. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, he said.

It was the second accident in two days in which a vehicle drove into the rear of a school bus.

In the earlier incident, the driver of a six-ton meat truck was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving after a collision with a school bus Tuesday on the Ventura Freeway in Studio City. Thirty people, including 27 elementary school students, suffered minor injuries.
