Appearance fees and other payments to track...

Appearance fees and other payments to track and field stars are being investigated by Britain’s income-tax office.

The British Amateur Athletics Board and the Amateur Athletic Assn. said they were giving full cooperation to the Inland Revenue Service’s inquiry, which will focus on athletes’ tax returns.

The inquiry follows allegations by former world record-holder Steve Ovett and the subsequent disclosure of the theft of nearly $40,000 in appearance money from the promotion officer of the athletics board, Andy Norman.
