Racing at Fairplex Park : Nakatani, Making Up for Lost Time, Wins With Annual Date
Apprentice rider Corey Nakatani, injured in a spill six days ago and inactive until Friday, won his second $100,000 race in as many days Saturday at Fairplex Park when Annual Date held off Flying Continental in the $104,800 Pomona Derby.
Nakatani rode Corvettin to victory in the $104,200 Las Madrinas Handicap Friday. Both Corvettin and Annual Date are trained by Donn Luby.
Annual Date made a move along the inside as the field neared the final turn, then angled outside On the Menu for the final furlong. Flying Continental finished strongly to get second place, a neck behind. On the Menu, a maiden, was third.
Annual Date was timed in 1:50 for the distance of about 1 1/8 miles and paid $12.60, $5.60 and $3.60. Endow, the 9-5 favorite, pulled up lame after the finish and had to be vanned off the track.
