McGwire’s 510 Yards Lead Aztecs

SALT LAKE CITY — Dan McGwire threw for 510 yards and two touchdowns to lead San Diego State to a 38-27 Western Athletic Conference victory over Utah Saturday night.
The game was tied, 21-21, after three quarters, but San Diego State (1-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference) scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Andy Trakas’ 26-yard field goal with 13:46 left put the Aztecs ahead for good, 24-21. Ron Slack then scored on a two-yard run, and Darrin Wagner had a 19-yard touchdown run.
Wagner also had a 57-yard touchdown reception on a pass from McGwire and four-yard run, both in the third quarter.
After Wagner’s 57-yard catch gave San Diego State a 14-13 early in the third quarter, the Utes (1-4, 0-2) came back with Darrel Hicks’ 33-yard touchdown reception from Scott Mitchell to put the Utes ahead, 19-14. Clifton Smith then caught a two-point conversion pass from Mitchell.
Wagner’s four-yard run tied the score, 21-21, with 7:12 left in the third quarter.
