Southwest Roundup : Ware Throws for 7 Touchdowns to Lead Houston to 65-7 Victory

Quarterback Andre Ware, directing college football’s highest-scoring offense, threw for seven touchdowns--three to Emmanuel Hazard--as the 14th-ranked Cougars crushed Temple, 65-7, at Houston.

Houston (3-0) scored the first six times it had the ball, with Ware connecting on touchdown passes of four yards to Tracy Good, two yards to Paul Smith and 79 and two yards to Hazard.

Roman Anderson added field goals of 28 and 43 yards.

Ware, who completed 30 of 45 passes for 413 yards, also hit Good with a five-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, making the score 41-0.

His sixth scoring pass was a 21-yarder to Hazard on Houston’s first possession of the second half. On the next possession, he threw a 17-yarder to Smith.

Penn State 16, Texas 12--Penn State’s Leonard Humphries returned a blocked punt four yards for a touchdown, giving the Nittany Lions the victory at Austin, Tex.

Baylor 29, Texas Tech 15--Brad Goebel passed for 347 yards, including scoring pass plays of 75 and 65 yards, as the Bears won at Waco, Tex.

Baylor improved its overall record to 2-2 as it gained revenge for a 36-6 beating by the Red Raiders last year. Texas Tech is 3-1.

Texas Christian 28, Southern Methodist 10--Running back Tommy Palmer sparked the Horned Frogs at Ft. Worth.

Palmer rushed six yards for one touchdown and took a screen pass from Ron Jiles 36 yards for another as the Horned Frogs (2-2) beat the Mustangs for the first time since 1971.

Arkansas 39, Texas El Paso 7--Todd Wright kicked four field goals, giving the Razorbacks an NCAA-record-tying 30 consecutive during the past two years, in a victory at Little Rock, Ark.

Wright kicked field goals of 37, 47, 22 and 37 yards--giving Arkansas kickers 30 in a row since last season, when Kendall Trainor made his last 23 attempts. The Razorbacks tied a record set by Washington’s Chuck Nelson in 1981-82.

Texas A&M; 31, So. Mississippi 17--The Golden Eagles’ Brett Favre had his best night passing but could not overcome the 22nd-ranked Aggies at College Station, Tex.

Favre completed 21 of 42 passes for a career-high 303 yards. However, the Aggies (3-1) countered with 316 yards rushing and two touchdowns by Robert Wilson.
