Indiana Changes

Thanks for the article on northern Indiana (“Back Home in Indiana,” Sept.24). I was amazed at the changes in this otherwise calm, stable area,

I lived in Elkhart from 1938 to 1949. Shipshewana was the home of the livestock auction, attended only by locals: The best restaurants were the YMCA cafeteria in Elkhart, John Bevens’ Steakhouse between Elkhart and Bristol and the B&B; in Nappanee. Only the latter remains.

The Amish were considered good neighbors, not curiosities. Their buggies filled the streets on Saturday, as they followed the farmer’s custom of coming to town at the end of the week.
