Apathy, Then Death Along Mulholland
I am writing about the article “Would-Be Rescuer Thrown Off Cliff, Dies From Injuries” (Sept. 19).
There is nothing more frustrating than encountering total apathy, as our homeowners group has done during the past two years, on pointing out to the authorities the dangerous and unacceptable conditions along Mulholland Drive, specifically pinpointing the escalating violence on the overlooks and turnouts, the drug dealings, gang activity and prostitution. We encounter total apathy.
It is now the ultimate feeling of waste and desperation to see one man killed and two injured after we had repeatedly alerted through public testimony, community marches and letters the entire City Council, the mayor, the police, the Fire Department, the Planning Department, the Planning Commission and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
We even went as far as to offer solutions in our proposal dated April 5, 1988, without the courtesy OF ONE SINGLE REPLY!
Governing Ladies and Gentlemen, you will forever have Carlos, who tried to help two women being taunted by a dozen youths on a “popular” overlook, on your conscience.
