Share

A woman who was killed when a high-performance sports car driven by her husband struck a power pole on Coast Highway north of Laguna Beach on the weekend was identified Monday as Sandra S. Lee, 43. Her husband, who suffered major injuries in the crash, has been identified as William R. Lee, 44. The couple was from Ontario.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Ken Daily said William Lee was driving their red Porsche about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when he lost control and it hit an embankment, then crashed into the pole. Sandra Lee was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband remained in critical condition Monday evening at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.

Witnesses told the CHP that the Porsche appeared to have been racing another sports car when it swerved across the road. The CHP estimated the Porsche’s speed was 60 m.p.h. at the least.

The crash knocked power lines down across the north lanes of the highway, prompting the CHP to divert traffic into southbound lanes. Traffic was tied up as emergency crews cleared the wreckage and Southern California Edison Co. workers repaired the power lines.
