Share

One month into the season, the University of La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps are the only football teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference without a victory.

But both teams hope to put an end to their winless ways with games Saturday. Claremont (0-3) visits Trinity of Texas (0-3) at 1:30 p.m. in San Antonio, and La Verne (0-3) travels to Whittier (1-2) for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Claremont came close to its first victory of the season last week, when it held a 23-13 lead over Whittier in the third quarter only to suffer a 27-23 defeat.

The Stags have been led by their strong pass combination of quarterback Mike Pembroke and wide receiver Darin Carlsen. Pembroke is the leading passer in the SCIAC, having completed 38 of 83 for 528 yards and two touchdowns. Carlsen has a conference-leading 16 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, the leader has been back Mike McCorkle with two interceptions.

La Verne will also display an outstanding passing attack for its game against Whittier. The Leopards are led by quarterback Mark Brown, who has passed for 521 yards and two touchdowns. He has been intercepted six times.

The Leopards also have three of the top five receiving leaders in the SCIAC in wide receivers Lamont Landers and Anthony Grove and tight end John Kusleika. Landers has 13 catches for 149 yards, Grove 12 for 196 and Kusleika 11 for 109.

Unfortunately for La Verne, the team also leads the SCIAC with 12 turnovers and is last in total defense, having allowed an average of 396.7 yards a game.

In other games Saturday, Azusa Pacific hosts the Cal Poly Pomona club team at 1:30 p.m. and Pomona-Pitzer visits the University of San Diego at 7:30 p.m.

Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) figures to face the most difficult challenge against an undefeated San Diego (4-0) squad. San Diego faced its toughest test of the season before defeating Redlands, 23-17, last week.

Pomona-Pitzer, which had a bye last week, enters the game with the top offense in the SCIAC. The Sagehens have flourished mostly behind their rushing attack, which is also ranked first in the conference.

The leader has been freshman Chris Smith, who tops the conference with 349 yards rushing in 56 carries. In fact, his average of 174.5 yards a game leads the NCAA Division III.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team could have its hands full when it visits UC Santa Barbara for a non-conference game at 7:30 tonight in Goleta.

The Broncos (3-4-1) will face a Santa Barbara squad that is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division I with a 9-0 record.

Santa Barbara, which handed Division II power Cal State Dominguez Hills its first defeat Monday by a 3-0 score, has been led by forward Dianne Manore and goalkeeper Jan Urich. Manore has seven goals and 15 points and Urich has an 0.23 goals-against average.

Pomona, ranked No. 17 in Division II, has been led by All-America forward Amy Johnson and midfielder Melissa Rogers. The Broncos scored their biggest win of the season in a 7-1 decision over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday.
