Roundup : Los Amigos’ Le Breaks Coach’s Record

Linh Le broke his coach’s course record, leading Los Amigos High School over Santiago, 19-34, in a Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country meet Thursday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Le, a junior, ran the mostly flat, three-mile course in 15 minutes 14 seconds to eclipse the course record of 15:18 set in 1986 by current Los Amigos Coach Peter Avila, who attended Santiago. Le’s time was a 33-second improvement on his previous best at Mile Square Park.

Le and teammate Sal Zavala led from the start, both passing the first mile mark in about 4:59. But by the second mile, Le had a 20-yard lead.

Zavala finished second in 16:09 and Los Amigos’ Jeff Bartsch was third in 16:26. Rounding out the Lobo top five were Berdino Mercada (fifth in 17:17) and Gilbert Zavala (eighth, 17:59).

In Angelus League boys’ cross-country:

Mater Dei defeated Bishop Amat, 15-48, at Irvine Park. Mater Dei’s Jeff Matsumoto finished first (16:12).

In Olympic League boys’ cross-country:

Visiting Whittier Christian defeated Santa Margarita, 20-41. Whittier Christian’s Tony Bergman set a course record in 16:08.

In South Coast League boys’ cross-country:

San Clemente defeated Dana Hills, 20-39. Daniel Niedenagel of Dana Hills finished first in 15:25. San Clemente’s Mike Farrell was second (15:30).

El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 19-38. Carey Classen finished fourth (16:15) for Mission Viejo.

Irvine defeated Capistrano Valley, 26-29. Andy Boylan of Capistrano Valley finished first (16:39).

In Sunset League boys’ cross-country:

Marina defeated Ocean View with its sixth runner breaking a 28-28 tie. Brian McCaffery of Marina (1-1 in league) ran 15:56 to win. Ocean View dropped to 0-2 in league play.

Edison defeated Westminster, 27-28. Dave Baker (16:01) finished third to lead host Edison (2-0).

In Angelus League girls’ cross-country:

Mater Dei defeated Bishop Amat, 15-49. Diane Chonette of Mater Dei finished first (20:24) at Irvine Regional Park.

In Olympic League girls’ cross-country:

Santa Margarita defeated Whittier Christian, 15-49. Amy Markel set a course record (21:23) for Santa Margarita.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country:

Costa Mesa defeated Laguna Hills, 26-31. Denisha Bendz finished first for host Costa Mesa (3-0).

In South Coast League girls’ cross-country:

El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 22-37. Sonya Hildebrand won for Mission Viejo (18:27).

Ninth-ranked Capistrano Valley defeated No. 2 Irvine, 25-30. Michelle Skinner of Capistrano Valley took first place (18:39).

In Sunset League girls’ cross-country:

Ocean View defeated visiting Marina, 26-30, as Christie Engasser finished first in 18:12.

Edison defeated Westminster, 15-46, as sophomore Shelley Taylor finished first in 18:32.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Villa Park 10, Canyon 8--No. 1 singles Ashley Thurston and No. 3 singles Stephanie Siegel each won two of three sets for visiting Villa Park (5-3, 1-1).

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

El Dorado 10, Esperanza 8--Tracy Botha swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Golden Hawks (4-0 in league play) at El Dorado.

Katella 15, Loara 3--Alisha Michaels swept, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, to lead visiting Katella (10-2, 3-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

La Quinta 18, Los Amigos 0--Host La Quinta (7-3, 6-0) was led by No. 1 singles Ann Pham, who swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 singles Nichole McLean, who swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Both have 17-1 records.

In Orange League girls’ tennis:

Western 17, Magnolia 1--Western’s top doubles team of Cindy Brown and Sara Wadnhwani swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 28-2 for the season. Host Western improved to 9-1 overall, 3-1 in league play.

Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 17, Costa Mesa 1--Jenny Marques swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Laguna Hills (3-6, 3-0).

Corona del Mar 17, University 1--Keri Thebus swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Corona del Mar (8-0, 2-0).

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Capistrano Valley 14, Mission Viejo 4--Page Bartelt swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team of Cori Emmons and Tauna Schweinberg swept, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, to lead host Capistrano Valley (8-0, 2-0).

In Sunset League girls’ tennis:

Marina 10, Huntington Beach 8--Tracy Crissell swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, leading host Marina (8-5, 3-0). Whitney Farr defeated Tasha Monroe, 6-4, and won a tiebreaker with Trista Neville, 7-6, to seal the victory for Marina.

Ocean View 16, Westminster 2--Jennifer Kornicks swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, to lead visiting Ocean View.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Magnolia 3, Western 0--Host Magnolia swept, 15-3, 15-12, 15-10. Jessica Abrams had 10 aces, 22 assists and three kills for Magnolia.

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Tustin 0--Tara Kroesch had 15 kills and four blocks as the Sailors (8-3, 2-0) swept, 15-1, 15-7, 15-8, at Newport Harbor.

In Sunset League girls’ volleyball:

Marina 3, Huntington Beach 0--Visiting Marina swept, 17-15, 15-7, 15-10. Cristin Rossman had 12 kills, five blocks and four aces for Marina.

In Freeway League water polo:

Fullerton 1, Sonora 4--Mike Maturo had five goals and Vince Cichoski had 11 saves to lead visiting Fullerton (8-8, 1-0).

At the Cerritos water polo tournament:

Esperanza 11, Alhambra 7--Jeff Fotchman and Brian Pickler had three goals each to pace Esperanza (12-1). Goalie Steven Palmer had 11 saves for Esperanza.

Cypress 8, Magnolia 3--Shane Lothrop had four goals and his brother, Shawn, had two for Cypress. Jesse Lavere scored twice for Magnolia.
