THE SIDELINES : Astros’ Biggio Gets Fine, Probation
Houston Astros catcher Craig Biggio today was placed on two years probation, fined $350 and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service after he was convicted of driving while intoxicated.
County Court-at-Law Judge Jim Barkley, who delivered the verdict Thursday, said failure to live up to the terms of the probation would get Biggio 180 days in jail.
Biggio was arrested June 8 several hours after the Astros defeated the San Diego Padres as he drove Astros third baseman Ken Caminiti home after the two had visited several bars.
An Intoxilyzer test given Biggio by Houston police an hour after his arrest had a reading of 0.13. Under Texas law, a person whose test shows 0.10 is regarded as intoxicated.
