It’s a Tie, No Matter How You Look at It

Alan Baker (Viewpoint, Sept. 30), with his simple comments on the recent Ryder Cup meeting between the United States and Europe, illustrates how partisans read into a tie anything they wish.

Seve Ballesteros, the super great of the European team, who has said he loves to beat the Americans, lost the tie when he was defeated by a Ryder Cup rookie, Paul Azinger, even though Azinger went into the water on the 18th hole.

And then, with Europe needing only a match tie for the overall victory, the Americans swept the last four matches for a 14-14 tie.

Europe was like an old title-holder on the last-round ropes and very desperate.

So nobody won and nobody lost.

A tie is a tie is a tie, especially at this high level.
