Western Athletic Conference Roundup : Mitchell Passes for 6 Touchdowns in Utah Win

Scott Mitchell threw six touchdown passes to lead Utah to a 50-45 Western Athletic Conference victory over Texas El Paso Saturday night at El Paso, Tex.
The Utes, 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the WAC, and the Miners, 1-5 and 0-2, exchanged the lead eight times.
The Miners led, 33-29, after three quarters, but Mitchell threw a two-yard pass to Clifton Smith early in the fourth quarter and followed on the next drive with a 20-yard scoring pass to Bryan Rowley. Smith’s three-yard touchdown run made it 50-33 with 5:27 remaining.
Howard Gasser kept the Miners alive with 34- and 24-yard touchdown passes, but their onside kick was recovered by Utah with 56 seconds to play.
Gasser connected on 22 of 42 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns, including a 74-yarder to Creg Evans.
Brigham Young 36, Wyoming 20--Ty Detmer passed for 337 yards and two touchdowns and Fred Whittingham scored twice as the Cougars beat the Cowboys at Provo, Utah.
The Cougars (2-0 and 4-1) broke quickly, outscoring the Cowboys, 22-0, in the first half.
Detmer, who completed 16 of 30 passes, hooked up with Whittingham on a six-yard scoring pass. Whittingham, a 200-pound fullback, rushed 16 yards for another score before the game was 30 minutes old.
The Cowboys (1-2 and 1-5) had only 91 yards total offense in the first half, and starting quarterback Peter Rowe completed only three of 12 passes for 25 yards.
Colorado St. 34, New Mexico 20--Touchdowns by safety Dan Wilson and halfback Tony Carr helped the Rams beat the Lobos at Albuquerque, N.M.
Colorado State, with three losses to nationally ranked teams, is 2-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. New Mexico lost its fourth in a row to drop to 1-5 overall, 0-3 in conference play.
Wilson’s 27-yard interception return for a touchdown on New Mexico’s came on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter and Carr’s 66-yard touchdown run with 13:16 left in the game.
