Southland Roundup : Fann’s Late Touchdown Helps CS Northridge to Win

Albert Fann scored on a four-yard run with 1:43 left as Cal State Northridge rallied for a 34-33 victory over Cal Lutheran Saturday night at Northridge.

Northridge tried for a two-point conversion, but quarterback Sherdrick Bonner was sacked by the Kingsmen’s Mike Mollinado.

Cal Lutheran had taken a 33-28 lead when Mike Sylvester intercepted a pass by Bonner and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. The Kingsmen counted on touchdown runs of 66, 20 and 41 yards by Craig Ashley. Ashley finished with 151 yards in 11 carries.

Fann, who scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter to give Northridge a 21-18 lead, finished with 99 yards in 25 carries.

Northridge improved to 4-2. Cal Lutheran dropped to 1-4.

La Verne 23, Whittier 19--Mark Brown threw touchdown passes of 62 and 36 yards to Anthony Grove in the fourth quarter to give the Leopards the win at La Verne.

Brown completed 14 of 37 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

Gaylan Sweet rushed for 108 yards in 30 carries and two touchdowns for Whittier.

Claremont-Mudd 42, Trinity University 20--Quarterback Mike Pembroke threw four touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Stags to a win at San Antonio.

Pembroke completed eight of 14 passes for 184 yards. His favorite target was Darin Carlsen, who had three catches for 77 yards, including touchdown receptions of 37 and nine yards.

Pembroke also ran for 48 yards in six carries, including a nine-yard touchdown run that gave the Stags a 42-6 lead in the third quarter. Trinity scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Claremont-Mudd improved to 1-3. Trinity dropped to 0-4.

UC Santa Barbara 24, Sonoma St. 3--Quarterback Steve Armstrong passed for two touchdowns and fullback Chuy Ornales rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown to lead the Gauchos to a win at Rohnert Park.

UC Santa Barbara (3-2) took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Armstrong threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brian Fleming and a nine-yard score to Khaleb Shahbo.

Ed Beaulac’s 39-yard field goal cut Sonoma State’s deficit to 14-3 in the second quarter, but Ornales scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter to put the Gauchos ahead, 21-3. Todd Reynolds kicked a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter to finish the scoring.

U. San Diego 31, Pomona-Pitzer 6--Senior running back Todd Jackson ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the first half to lead the Toreros to a win over the Sagehens at San Diego.

Jackson finished with 117 yards in 17 carries.

San Diego improved to 5-0, the first time since 1981 that the Toreros have opened with five consecutive wins.

Portland St. 55, Cal Poly SLO 26--Rinaldo Shackelford caught three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Vikings to victory at San Luis Obispo.

Shackelford caught seven passes for 215 yards.

Quarterback Keith Jarrett completed 20 of 36 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns for San Luis Obispo (2-3).
