Julian Harvey’s goal gave second-ranked UC Irvine a 13-12 water polo victory over No. 1 California at 2:16 of the sixth overtime, believed to be a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. record. Irvine officials could not reach officials at the NCAA office in Mission, Kan., to confirm that six overtimes is a record.
Cal (13-2), which had its 13-match winning streak broken, forced overtime at 10-10 on Julian Bailey’s goal with one second left in regulation. Under NCAA rules, after two complete three-minute overtimes, a tied match goes to three-minute sudden-death overtimes until there is a winner.
Skylar Putnam had five goals for UC Irvine (11-2), while Chris Humbert scored five for Cal.
