“It was one of those nights when whatever you shot went in,” Verbeek said. “We needed a night when the goals went in. They came out like gangbusters but we got a power play and gained the momentum.”

Joe Sakic had three goals for Quebec and Peter Stastny, Greg Adams and Guy Lafleur had a goal apiece.

Winnipeg 5, Philadelphia 3--Doug Smail scored twice at Winnipeg to lead the Jets past the Flyers, despite three goals by Philadelphia’s Rick Tocchet.

Rookie Tom Draper, making his first start of the season and third in a Jets’ uniform, saved 30 shots to hand Philadelphia its third loss in as many games this season.

Buffalo 2, Minnesota 2--Mike Foligno scored at 2:42 of the third period, rallying the Sabres to tie the North Stars at Buffalo.

Foligno capped a two-goal Buffalo rally when he converted a pass from Pierre Turgeon. Foligno was standing at the edge of the crease and tipped in the puck.

In the overtime period, Mike Gartner nearly won it for Minnesota when he skated in front alone, but goalie Daren Puppa blocked it with 1:32 left.

New York Rangers 5, Chicago 3--James Patrick, Tony Granato and Ulf Dahlen scored power-play goals in less than four minutes at Chicago as the Rangers erased a 3-1 deficit to win.

The Rangers scored the three goals during a five-minute power play advantage.

Adam Creighton, Doug Wilson and Dirk Graham each got their first goals of the season, giving Chicago a 3-1 lead by 12:37 of the second period.
