U.S. Wins Title at Wheelchair Tennis Event
The United States defeated France, 3-0, to win the men’s title of the World International Team Cup division at the U.S. Open Championship of wheelchair tennis Sunday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Randy Snow of Birmingham, Ala., the No. 1-ranked singles player in the world, defeated Laurent Giammartini, 7-6, 6-3, and Chip Parmelly of Diamond Bar beat Thierry Callier, 6-6, 6-3. In doubles, Brad Parks of San Clemente and Rick Slaughter of Nashville defeated Giammartini and Callier, 6-3, 6-4.
Great Britain beat Israel, 3-0, for third place.
In the women’s division, Holland won the title, defeating the United States, 3-0.
Monique Vanden Bosche beat Mary Jones of Fountain Valley, 6-3, 6-0, and Schantal Vandierendonck defeated Nancy Olson of Stony Point, N.Y., 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The doubles team of Vandierendonck and Ellen De Lange defeated Becky White-Chun of Fresno and Terry Lewis of Modesto, 6-1, 6-4. Australia took third place in the women’s championship, defeating Israel by default.
Individual competition begin at 9 a.m. today with the finals scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
