From Times staff and wire reports

A single-engine sightseeing plane made a forced landing in the Grand Canyon, injuring two German tourists and the pilot, authorities said. The Lake Powell Air Service flight was on a 1 1/2-hour scenic tour when the tower at Grand Canyon Airport received a distress call from the plane before it went down about three miles west of Phantom Ranch, in the bottom of the canyon below the South Rim, said park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge. She said that the plane was found outside approved flight corridors.
