Ivan Lendl overpowered qualifier Mauro Menezes of Brazil, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round of the Australian Indoor Wednesday night at Sydney, Australia.

Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, took 48 minutes to rout Menezes, ranked 230th, but three other seeded players were upset.

Australian left-hander Mark Kratzmann eliminated second-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), in another first-round match, and third-seeded Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany and eighth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia both lost second-round matches.

Qualifier Lars Wahlgren of Sweden ousted Steeb, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Thomas Hogstedt of Sweden beat Masur, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Lendl said he was satisfied with his victory.

“It’s always nice not to have to extend yourself early in any tournament,” said Lendl, who said he played golf, went window shopping for a Ferrari and “slept almost all day” in preparation for his opening match.

Kratzmann saved a match point in the final-set tiebreaker before downing Hlasek, who is ranked 10th in the world.

“I think people can see I am a lot different now,” Kratzmann said. “I’m more pumped up and that is the way I should have been playing the last few years,”

Wahlgren said of his victory: “This is my biggest win ever. I didn’t expect to make the quarters for the first time in my career.”

Ronald Agenor of Haiti upset second-seed Andre Agassi, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round of the Marlboro Championships at Hong Kong.

Agenor, who arrived from Paris two hours before his match, took a little more than an hour to beat Agassi, 19, who is ranked fifth in the world. It was the Haitian’s third victory over Agassi in as many matches, dating to 1987.

“Agenor is a very strong player,” Agassi said, adding that “there was nothing I could do. He just played better.”

In another match, Aaron Krickstein beat Tommy Ho, 6-2, 6-0, in less than hour.

Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia upset third-seeded Helena Sukova, 6-3, 6-2, in an international tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany. Zrubakova needed only 49 minutes to oust Sukova, also of Czechoslovakia, who said she was tired after a long flight from Tokyo, where she played in the Federation Cup.

In other matches, Monica Seles of Yugoslavia defeated West Germany’s Sylvia Hanika, 6-3, 6-4; second-seeded Zina Garrison downed Elna Reinach of South Africa, 6-4, 6-1; Mary Joe Fernandez routed Sandra Wasserman of Belgium, 6-1, 6-0, and Dianne van Rensburg of South Africa defeated Claudia Porwik of West Germany, 7-5, 6-3.
