Frank Robinson, who guided the Baltimore Orioles to one of the greatest turnarounds in baseball history, is Associated Press’ manager of the year. Robinson got 69 points, and Don Zimmer of the Chicago Cubs had 51. No other manager reached double figures.
Baltimore went 54-107 in 1988, the worst record in the majors. This season, the Orioles went 87-75 and came within two games of Toronto in the American League East.
Robinson said: “The players are the ones who did the job. What I brought to the process was a philosophy that we would play every game like it was the seventh game of the World Series. We would go out and play hard every day.”
