Texas A&I; tailback Johnny Bailey broke Tony Dorsett’s 13-year-old National Collegiate Athletic Assn. career rushing record Saturday night.

A four-yard run in the third quarter against Central State (Okla.) gave Bailey 6,085 yards, eclipsing the mark of 6,082 set by Dorsett in his four years at Pittsburgh in 1973-76.

Bailey rushed 16 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, then, on the Javelinas’ first play of the second half, he scored on a 49-yard run. He needed eight more carries to get the record and finished with 172 yards, his season average, with four touchdowns in 25 carries.

For the past two years, Bailey has won the Harlon Hill Award, Division II’s version of the Heisman Trophy, and has led the division in rushing since the start of his college career.

Bailey, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior from Houston, had 2,011 yards as a freshman, 1,598 as a sophomore and 1,442 last season.
