Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux finally broke his goal-less streak, but so did New York’s Tomas Sandstrom, whose tie-breaking goal helped the Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the Penguins Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
Lemieux, the National Hockey League scoring champion the last two seasons, scored his first goal of the season in the second period to give the Penguins a 2-2 tie.
Sandstrom’s first, the game-winner, came on a power-play at 6:24 of the final period.
The Rangers wrapped up the game on an empty-net goal by Chris Nilan with six seconds left.
Vancouver 7, Boston 6--Daryl Stanley scored his first goal of the season with 21 seconds left at Vancouver to give the Canucks a victory over the Bruins.
Stanley’s turnaround shot from 40 feet hit Boston goaltender Rejean Lemelin in the catching glove and dribbled into the net to break a 6-6 tie.
Vancouver defenseman Paul Reinhart had two goals and two assists.
Calgary 3, Philadelphia 2--Joe Nieuwendyk had a goal and assist and Mike Vernon turned back 23 shots as the Flames beat the Flyers at Philadelphia.
The victory was the Flames’ 10th straight over the Flyers in a string that started Dec. 11, 1986.
Chicago 3, Detroit 0--Goaltender Jacques Cloutier stopped 21 shots and the Blackhawks earned their first shutout in more than two years in beating the Red Wings at Chicago.
Cloutier, making his second start since he was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres just before the season, stopped six breakaways.
“We had a couple of breakdowns, but defensively, it had to be the best game since I’ve been here,” Cloutier said.
The Blackhawks’ last shutout was on Jan. 28, 1987, by Bob Sauve against Buffalo.
