San Diego police shot the tires of a stolen car Thursday when they feared the fleeing vehicle was heading toward a school zone where it would endanger children.

A police spokesman said officers spotted the car downtown at about 8 a.m. and chased it to Hillcrest, where it drove into a cul-de-sac south of Pennsylvania and 7th avenues.

When officers approached, the driver turned the car around and smashed into a patrol car as it fled.

The officers, fearing for the safety of children, shot the tires, Lt. Larry Kenny said. Police arrested the driver and a passenger at 7th and University avenues, Kenney said. A second passenger ran away.

The two men who were arrested were identified only as Mexican citizens who may be part of an auto-theft ring.
