FASHION : Dressing Up, Rock Style

Share

When it comes to style, it’s anybody’s guess who nabs the title of “World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll band,” but when two contenders--Guns N’ Roses and the Rolling Stones--play back to back in concert, loyal fans will dress up, or dress down, to pay homage.

At Wednesday’s opening night scene (to be repeated both days this weekend), two distinct fashion camps were apparent. The first was the Sunset Strip-style rocker look, inspired by the skintight jeans and printed head bands of the young Guns. The second, more subdued look belonged to the older generation--over age 35.

The youthful rock ‘n’ rollers in the crowd, dressed in tight, provocative clothes, were the eye-catchers. Leather was their preferred material for jackets, pants and skirts. Shredded black leggings and sequined minidresses had a place, as well.

The old guard had its fashion moment too. Amid a strong showing of yuppies in chinos and sweaters, a few nostalgia buffs put their ‘60s fashion memories to interesting use. There were floral suits and skirts bordering on psychedelic. And Mick Jagger’s influence was apparent in one man’s choice of a cape, emblazoned with a Union Jack.
