GOLF ROUNDUP : Donnie Hammond Shoots a 65 to Tie Tim Simpson

Donnie Hammond, seeking his second consecutive victory, overcame blustery weather Friday to shoot a 65 and tie Tim Simpson for the lead after three rounds of the Disney tournament at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Hammond, who had the low round of the day by two strokes, and Simpson, the second-round leader, are at 14-under-par 202. Simpson, who had a two-stroke lead when the round began, shot a 70.

Fred Couples and Bob Gilder were tied for third at 204 after shooting 69s. Four more players were at 206.

Hammond won the PGA’s most recent tour stop, the Texas Open, two weeks ago. His second consecutive 65 came on a sunny but windy day with temperatures in the 50s.

Dick Hendrickson and Charles Coody shot five-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the $400,000 Transamerica seniors tournament at Napa, Calif.

Dave Hill, Billy Casper and Bruce Devlin were tied for third at 69. Seven golfers were two strokes behind the leaders at 70, including Arnold Palmer.
